Day 5: Guarda to Baiona

By moving from Portugal to Spain we changed from Western European to Central European Timezone. As a result we departed later this morning at 8.39. We decided to have breakfast at the hotel as we were going to struggle to find a cafe open early on a Sunday morning.

Also we definitely felt the effect of the 30km march the day before as we had not quite fully recovered.

Leaving Guarda we had a major climb up steep steps and navigated narrow streets before quickly dropping out onto the coast leaving Guarda behind.

Reflection of the sunrise as we left Guarda.

Our  pace was slow but the coastline was beautiful. It was different in that it was much more rugged with rocky outcrops into the sea and very few beaches. Any beaches we did sea were nearly almost covered in sea weed.

Less than 150km to Santiago.
These markers appeared when we entered Galicia,Spain pointing the way. No idea why it goes to 3 decimal points!

The route was mainly costal paths in the morning and this turned into a lot of road walking.

Where we stopped for Lunch

After a long time on the road we climbed up 150m away from the coast cutting off a headland.

We then dropped down and Ito a village and with 3km to go stopped for a very welcome beer. Pace has really dropped now as the legs get very heavy.

The waiter at the bar gave us a  nicer route than the Camino into Biona taking us around a headland that gave views of the huge bay. We also met a lone bagpiper practising.

The view was amazing and very difficult to capture.

We eventually arrived in Biona at 17.30 and were staying in a pension. Did Laundry and headed out for diner.

Today: 31.61 km (19.6M)

Remaining CdP: 133km of 270km

Remaining CdP+CdF: 224km of 362km
