Day 0: Travel to Porto

Yesterday Bob Hannon arrived from Atlanta and we both flew to Porto today. Bob was really the instigator of this trip. When we visited Beth and Bob back in June in Atlanta  Bob was intrigued and said he would love to join me on a walk when we were leaving. I didn’t really take it seriously but after a few texts, it was clear Bob wanted an adventure. I wanted to do something in the autumn but had not planned anything. 

We agreed about a 2-week stint, the Camino de Portuguese Costal Route from Porto to Santiago taking 11day s, 271km, and the Camino de Fisterra a 4-day walk, 92km, from Santiago to Fisterra on the coast and historically where pilgrims thought they had reached the end of the world. 

So Bob booked his tickets to London and I booked flights to Porto.

Departed Gatwick on a slightly delayed Sleeze Jet flight at 10am. 

Arrived in Porto it was chucking it down and big winds are forecast tonight. We were tourists for the day and visited City Hall.



Then visited the cathedral and climbed the tower where there were great views of the City. 




Tomorrow we headed to Vila do Conde 24km and the forecast is not good with 80km/h winds and rain till about 15.00.

Day 11: Padr贸n to Santiago de Compestela

 We planned to get up earlier than usual but slept in. We still left the accommodation at 7.30.  It was chucking it down and it was dark, sunrise was not till 8.55.  So walking with head torches we headed through the suburbs avoiding the large puddles. It was easy enough going as it did not start climbing to 7km. The route was mostly along narrow alley ways, busy roads  and dirt tracks. There were street lights for about 3km.  Soaked through we stopped for breakfast at 8km. Unfortunately a large tour group that we had nicknamed the yellow jackets had got there before us so there was a very long queue 馃槩.   Back on the road and the rain had eased , then we started to climb to 260m. Some of it was steep and at at one point we had to negotiate a fallen tree.  Less than 10km to go to Santago. Met Sissy 72, had hip replacements and waiting on two knee replacements! Day 5: Guarda to Baiona

By moving from Portugal to Spain we changed from Western European to Central European Timezone. As a result we departed later this morning at 8.39. We decided to have breakfast at the hotel as we were going to struggle to find a cafe open early on a Sunday morning.   Also we definitely felt the effect of the 30km march the day before as we had not quite fully recovered.  Leaving Guarda we had a major climb up steep steps and navigated narrow streets before quickly dropping out onto the coast leaving Guarda behind.  Reflection of the sunrise as we left Guarda. Our  pace was slow but the coastline was beautiful. It was different in that it was much more rugged with rocky outcrops into the sea and very few beaches. Any beaches we did sea were nearly almost covered in sea weed.  Less than 150km to Santiago. These markers appeared when we entered Galicia,Spain pointing the way.
